✨From Demodex to International Medical Mission ✨

The latest Meetup topic "From Demodex to International Medical Mission" was held on Saturday April 12, 2025.


Our special guest, board certificated ophthalmologist Willie Y. W. Chen M.D. from Chen Eye Center, specializes fellowship in cornea research, external disease. During this meetup, Dr. Chen equipped us with eye care knowledge and valuable insights to ensure you stay in line with correct eye care, current treatment method and eye disease prevention.



Demodex

The Demodex is very common and easily found on human bodies. Demodex prefers areas where sebum production is high, and is typically found in hair follicles on the human face, generally in greater numbers around the cheeks, nose, and forehead, but also elsewhere on the face, eyelids, and ears. The mites may also be found on other parts of the body.


High numbers of Demodex are associated with blepharitis, rhinophyma and people with immunosuppression. Colloquial names for the rhinophyma include "rosacea", "whiskey nose", "gin blossom", and "potato nose". The skin environment caused by is more hospitable to mites than normal skin, allowing them to flourish. They may physically block the hair follicle, carry disease-causing bacteria or, after death, their bodies may cause either a delayed hypersensitivity response, or an innate immune response.


While most people have Demodex, an overgrowth around the eyes also known as Eyelash mites, can cause symptoms like:

  • Itchy or burning eyes, especially in the morning

  • Swollen eyelids

  • Crusty eyes, especially at the lash line

  • Red, irritated eyes

  • Watery eyes

  • Blurred or decreased vision

  • Falling eyelashes

  • Yellowish discharge

  • Scaly, rough patches of skin



The treatment goal is to reduce the mite population and alleviate. You could start with good Hygiene Practices such as:

  • Regularly clean your eyelids

  • Warm compresses

  • Avoid Sharing eye makeup

  • Wash your hands frequently

  • Replace or discard old makeup

  • Consider switching to glasses temporarily


It's important to consult with a eye doctor for diagnosis and treatment recommendations if you suspect you have eyelash mites, as they can sometimes contribute to other eye conditions like blepharitis. As the best approach will depend on the severity of the infestation and individual factors.



International Medical Mission

Besides his private practice, Dr. Chen has served medical mission in Belize, the north-eastern coast of Central America. He shared this journey with photo and stories to put it a great way to get back to the roots of medicine while expanding his clinical and personal experience.

美東南玉山科技協會(Monte Jade Southeastern Science and Technology Association)日前於Hopstix餐廳舉辦玉山小聚, 特別邀請到眼科專科醫師陳英偉分享及說明寄生於眼睫毛的毛囊螨(demodex)其症狀，治療及眼睛保健方法。


常被稱作「睫毛蟎」（eyelash mites）的蠕形蟎(demodex)位於眼周的感染非常常見, 其中毛囊蠕形蟎在毛囊內被發現，皮脂腺蠕形蟎則寄生於連接毛囊的皮脂腺內。常寄生在鼻部附近、睫毛與眉毛，也寄生在身體的其他部位。


他也分享了參與眼科國際義診的經驗及心得, 於中美洲，包括駐亞特蘭大台北經濟文化辦事處經濟組組長唐永興，以及亞特蘭大僑教中心主任閻樹榮等近40人參與。
